I put this one together last night, and it's doing
pretty well.

SH: International House of Tao
Starting Ring: Fire
Sensei: Hiruma (if FETA is big in your area, I'd use
Hantei instead to take out FtH, but military is big
here, so Hiruma helps me more.

DYNASTY:
Hi Tsu x3
Hanoshi x3
Heichi Chokei x3
Shioda x3
Hizuka x2
Takao exp2
Asako Sagoten x2 (just in case)

Prayer Shrines x3
Jade Works x3
Small Farm x3
Merchant Caravan x3
Vows of Brotherhood
Hawks and Falcons x3
Bonsai Gardens x2 (I don't have any Temples to
Shinsei, anyone have extra?)

Prophets Tower
Sorrows Path x3 (these two are the clincher against
military)

Regions of Rokugan
Architects of the Wall
Hidden Emperor
Emperor's Peace
Restoring Doji Treasury
Naga Storm Mirumoto Mountain

FATE:
Iaijutsu Challenge x3
Iaijutsu Duel x3
Moment Before the Strike x3
Come One at a Time x3
Tetsubo x3
Nunchaku (only have one)
Entrapping Terrain x3
Block Supply Lines x3
Flooded Pass x3
Superior Tactics x3
Strike of Flowing Water x3
Imperial Edicts x3 (little more FtH protection + 4
Focus)

All Distances are One x3 (to put the sorrows path on
the Prophets Tower province)

Ring of Earth
Ring of Void

Any ideas on how to improve it? Needless to say, it
wins by honor.

Why don't you replace the Hawks and Falcons by Kabuki Theater Troupes? It

Greetings Brothers

Sorry guys, been lurking for while, been too damn busy.

I have a question about Shioda...

Has the card text been changed at all?, do we still need to have to Ring
of Void in play to bring Shioda into play?

You must not have the real Shioda. The one you are
looking at it is from that Seige set. The real Shioda
from SCC (if that is the set), only says that you must
have a ring, no specific one, in play. Play him with
that text.

Hate to break it to ya, but you never DID need the Ring of Void in
play to play Shioda. You have the Siege of Sleeping Mountain version
which is simplified for play with that set. The real version simply
requires A ring (that is, any Ring). The older version overrides the
new in this case. Shioda originally appeared in Scorpion Clan Coup,
so it's not too hard to find the real copies of him if you search
around a bit. He also appeared as a foil in Fire and Shadow if you prefer
the white borders.

The original text merely requires an elemental ring, not necessarily the
Ring of Void. The Siege of Sleeping Mountain copy specifies the RoV, but
it is designed to be "simplified" for new players. That set does not
change the official wording. You just need a ring - any ring.

No, they won't make that mistake again.

Yeah, about 25-30% of the cards were significantly changed in some way.
Most weren't changed at all or were just re-worded to make their meaning
a bit more clear.

If you've got 'em, Imperial Surveyor's (Fire and Shadow Uncommon) work well
with the Refuge. If you can get a couple of Dragonfly Fortresses in play,
along with the Surveyor, a refuge and a bunch of expendable 3C guys (Hoshi
Wayan, for instance) then you don't need Walking the Way. You can get cards
for as long as your personalities hold out. I'm not sure what effect a
deck that "eats" its personalities for Fate cards would have if
it won GenCon. :^)

So you need walking the way and other cards?
Well some of the members of this email list do trade cards. But trading monk
clan stuff on this page is like pulling teeth out. The best place I have
gone to trade is the site at the Formely Corrupt Lion Page. It is now called
the deathseeker page. This is a link.
The Shadowlands Refuge of
the Lion Clan
Click on the side for trades and post and read. If you need cards feel
free to send me a haves/want list. I have also done over 100 internet
email/slowmail trades and have over 90 email references. I am always willing
to consider a trade. I think I have traded for every card except for the
designer wins card. I migth have been able to get that to, but the guy
wanted three wedges and 6 swords..EEK I am a member of the GAB. GAB stands
for Good traders Against Bad traders.
they have a website.
G.A.B. Main Page

Now for getting cards. There is a new card called the Imperial Surveyor.
With him you can recycle your Refuge of the Three sisters cards real well.
This makes them reusabale. If you use the Fortress of the Dragonfly you can
increase your personalites chi by one for each fortress you have in play, so
you can make shioda able to blow himself up to get even a ring.
This is real handy if you decide to to play the Iron Citadel and raise your
province strength to 15 and nuke out your Kaede Sensei.
Does anybody remember how enlightenment was always destroyed by that stupid
New Years Celebration event that made us discard our hands and get five new
cards?
Suddenly it was Plan B time, because the Ring of Earth is sitting in my
discard pile and I don't play with Bonsai gardens.
Remember guys old school monk does not celebrate the New Year.

Did anyone ever play New Years? I have yet to see it
in a deck. At all.

I do remember back in the 30/30 days. I was facing a
LSD, and I got 3 rings in one battle! I did lose the
game though, but it was worth it!

I might be wrong, but I don't think Monk enlightenment has lost anything
from Open to JadeEx. Enlightened Ruler is now useless because of Kaede
Sensei, and the acolytes, though having real nice abilities, are too
expensive for this environment IMO.
So unless (hopefully) I've forgotten something, an open enlightenment deck
will look mostly like a JadeEx enlightenment deck ...

Well I can counter you on that Enlightened Ruller could actually be very helpful against Dishonor decks as well as Favor Control. Also if You sneak a Dashmar in there you can bow Dashmar to automatically win if you are at 40 honor. Sneak a his most favored in there and maybe get another fast 5 honor. The wasting disease could be a fun spell as well as to personality destruction.
Another fun trick could be using Stale winds. Gives you something fun and easy to bow for the ring of air. And with the fun kiho of rest my brother( I think it is the one that destroys personalities without the shadowlands trait printed on the card but with the shadowlands taint) you can destroy all those mean one honor people he has.
Yes, most of the monk decks out there work real well in the Jade extended environment. I just want to see some examples of peoples Open Monk decks. Which it would be nice if you actually supplied your own to take a look at.

No decks, no [unless you want to play Yoritomo's Alliance Enlightenment
[grins]]. On the other hand, I do have a suggestion: Yodin. Okay, so it's
an obvious suggestion, but when a 3 chi Monk has an ability that allows you
even more Ring manipulation, you really have to think about it...

Picture Kaede Sensei along with an overlaid Yodin [and the Tao of Shinsei
attached]. Go get one Ring, play all five...

Subject: [Brotherhood] Blame the Ninja!

Greetings brothers,

Suana took some of our shrine for a trip to Isawa lands, to see a
play held by a lowly Asako theater troupe. The play, a comedy, was
quite refreshingly funny, if a bit irreverent and had more cursing
than a Hida mess hall.
It follows the journey of a group of four acolytes (I do not know why
the Acolyte of Earth got such a minor role, although she was the
Acolyte of Void's love interest), who get turned into Ninja and
eventually regain their souls.

I must admit the low quality costumes and props did in no way stop
the play from being brilliant, and the songs they sang were
excellent. Of great note is this anthem that our armies could very
well sing to cheer themselves up in this time of crisis. I have
acquired the lyrics from the playwright, Asako Wakojako.

(setting: The Acolyte of Water was provoked by his Ninjified
brethren into blowing himself up by casting a powerful spell. This
made their Shiba guardians angry and militant, quite a feat for teh
apparent pacifists. Suddenly Tsukune breaks into song...)

- ------------------------------------
Times have changed, our kids are losing face,
They used to hate the shadow
but now they're steeped in that disgrace.

Should we blame the Emperor?
Or morbid destiny?
Or should we blame the ingredients of our tea?

NO!
Blame the Ninja! Blame the Ninja!

With that face: the lack of nose,
and what of eyes they're missing those.

Blame the Ninja! Blame the Ninja!

We need to form a full assault,
It's the Ninjas' fault!

Don't blame me,
for the Acolyte of Void.
He got kidnapped by Ninja,
and now his face is all destroyed!

And the Acolyte of Fire,
was Ninjified himself,
and when I challenge him,
he tells me to go kill myself!

Blame the Ninja! Blame the Ninja!
It seems that everything's gone wrong since the Ninja came along.

Blame the Ninja! Blame the Ninja!
They're not even a real clan anyway.

It's such a shame to see that they got Hosigeru.
He tried to cast a spell that was too strong so he just blew.

Or should we blame the magic?
Or should we blame the Water?
Or that wizened crazy Elemental Master?

Heck No!
Blame the Ninja! Blame the Ninja!

With all their Shadow hullabaloo,
And that bitch the Mystic too.

Blame the Ninja!
Shame on the Ninja!
For their evil we must kill,
And let the Shadow be dealt a blow,
Let's fight, don't run,
or we'll be undone!
We must blame them to cause a fuss,
Before somebody thinks of blaming us!

- ------------

There were other splendid songs, but this was by far the best by my
own humble opinion.

Suana seems to be a good judge of plays. A lot more outgoing than
Takao is anyway.

I heartily recommend you to watch this magnificent, very funny,
play. Not for those with Matsu blood I'm afraid...
